There will always be naysayers and supporters. It was then that I ran across an article about CMANO, which if memory serves me well, was then called Red Pill. H2 in it's day.mid 90's till about 2000, I was looking forward to the then forthcoming Harpoon IV and was devastated when it turned into vaporware. There are sadly, some that also yearn for database editing, but I think Dimitris and team do a great job of actively listening to the gaming community and will always update their database, provided the update is factually based, even if loosely factually based, such as the Super Tomcat and other hypotheticals. This course of action made a particular duo of database editors enraged as their usefulness was now becoming very limited to the Harpoon series only. Here's where the party split off and Warfare Sim decided to make their own product, announcing early on that it would not repeat the mistake of Harpoon and having an editable database for the general public. The problem arose when mutiple parties began making and modifying their own databases, believing theirs to be better than the other, but also potentially creating new bugs to fix by not sharing a common database. You had a hard core group of fans (some fanatical) that wanted it to be the unicum simulator and therein created a new set of issues, database editing. I believe the final coffin nail for Harpoon was when they were bought out by Ubisoft and a niche modern naval sim was not in their future vision.Ī strength (and some argue a weakness) of Harpoon, was the ability for one to manipulate the database. In my opinion (keep restating what's not obvious to some), though many bugs existed and still exist to this day with the Harpoon series, the series were still playable. In all fairness to the Harpoon team, I think they were becoming overwhelmed by bug squashing, which was compounded by database editing interjected in the bug reporting. CMANO surfaced, in my opinion, because there was a rift created by the failure of Harpoon IV to come to fruition and the preceding titles (H2, H3 and UE) were growing long in the tooth, both graphically and lacking continued support by its development team. Some similarities exist between the two but both have their own unique strengths and weaknesses. There are some very STRONG passions running in both camps and those feelings get exposed quite often when comparing the two series. I will be impressed if this thread remains above board and not locked after a few days. Careful, you may wish for more than you may want to hear.
